If you are learning piano playing as an adult then it is best to work some practice time to practice the piano in during the day. It is best to establish a practice routine to following each day. It is good to practice things in a certain order or just mix it up a little every day.
The one area you should get in the habit of practicing is playing scales. You do not have practice every scale daily. Consider working on the sharp scales one and the flat scale another day. It does not matter how you do it but you need to practice some form of scales for a period of time before playing.
The next element that should be practiced is chords. When you practice the piano scales work on making up as many chords as time allows during the exercise. As you work on playing scales and chords you will find that you will improve and become better at improvising. Playing written music will become better because you fingers will easily play the notes and rhythms.
Establish a specific piece of music that you can play during each practice session before you begin playing other songs. Any song that you find easy to play will do. This will provide you a great feeling of satisfaction. You do not want to select a song that is tricky and new for this part of the practice session. What you want to do is start with positive experience. Working on the harder pieces of music can come later in the session.
After you have warmed up playing the starting piece, begin practicing music that you have been working on to learn. Practice the spots that give you trouble and play them without stopping from were the section begins to the end.
At this point in the practice the piano it is a great time to work on sight-reading a new piece of music you have not played before.
This would be a good time to stop and take a small break.
Take time to eat something you, drink some water, and make any necessary phone call. After the break continue and finish the practice session. You should not practice until you are exhausted. It is better to practice a while and take small breaks to rest and breathe life back into the piano playing.
You want to set some time during the practice session to improvise. You want to work on making up music based on the scales and chords you are working on to learn. This is a time that should provide enjoyment and pleasure. Improvisation is good way to feel what you are playing and provide a feeling of complete freedom.
You do not have to practice every day. It is OK to take a day off if you feel a little tired and worn out. You do not want to kill enthusiasm by overworking and practicing too much. You always want to have a feeling of excitement about piano playing to keep you moving forward and improving.
If motivation is a problem purchase a few CD’s of piano players you like and listen to them. Listen to a movie soundtrack that features a piano. Do whatever you need to do to get back into practicing and playing the piano.
Boredom is a real killer. Do not let it set in.
Have fun and enjoy when you practice the piano and play songs. It is a great versatile instrument.
